Schools Project 2008- 2009

The first year of the Schools Project (August 2008- June 2009) saw collaboration between CCC and 4 primary schools in Dumfries & Galloway.

The pupil led Project involved hands on work to collect the data required to calculate the schools' carbon footprints, including energy and water bills as well as waste, food and travel data. This approach is seen to be useful in opening the pupils' eyes to the huge energy and resource consumption, as well as greenhouse gas emissions, associated with everyday activities. The pupils learned about the major role they can play in reducing the stresses we are putting on our planet.

Teachers and pupils developed and implemented Emission Reduction Action Plans for both their schools and their homes.

The aim of the project was to reduce the schools' carbon emissions by 15% over the school year. Despite the cold winter all schools managed to reduce their carbon footprints in some or all areas: 2 reduced their oil consumption through improved heat monitoring and by fitting radiator reflective panels; 1 reduced food consumption and food waste; 1 reduced their electricity consumption through behavioural changes and by replacing tungsten bulbs with low energy equivalents.

Project Stages:

  • Carbon Awareness Lessons

Sessions are run in each school to provide information (with a Scottish emphasis) about climate change and carbon emissions.

  • School Audits

CCC staff work with school staff and pupils to audit and measure their schools’ carbon footprints.

  • School-Home Project

Pupils and teachers are encouraged and assisted to work out their homes’ carbon footprints.

  • Action Plans

The earlier work leads to the creation of Action Plans - to stimulate change resulting in reduced carbon emissions.

  • Implementation

The schools work with CCC to implement Action Plans and address barriers when they occur

  • Monitoring

After 6 months, schools and pupils are assisted to monitor progress with a full review.

The Schools Project complements the work of the Eco Schools Programme and helps the schools involved apply for their Green Flag.

The Schools Project is funded by the Climate Challenge Fund, a Scottish Government fund supporting communities seeking to help tackle climate change by reducing their carbon emissions.

What a Load of Rubbish play visits Springholm and Kirkbean Primary pupils

The Hopscotch Theatre Company brought their play “What A Load Of Rubbish” to Springholm Primary School on 17th March  ‘09 to teach the kids all about waste and where it ends up.  The theme complemented the Schools Project well, as waste is a significant part of any schools carbon footprint.  Springholm Primary was joined by P5-7 from Kirkbean Primary to watch the play.  The hour long show covered a wide range of issues from landfill to incineration to taxing household waste.  All told through the eyes of a young girl and boy who visit their grandma and find that her cottage is fast being encroached upon by the local landfill site.  The play culminated in a sing-song involving dancing recycling bins and pupil participation.  Hopscotch Theatre Company is based in Glasgow and is touring schools with the play.
